As we gather on the First Sunday after the Epiphany, we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus. We read and reflect on the story of John, baptizing disciples at the Jordan River, and John's experience with Jesus and his baptism. We hear John's hesitation to take the role of "baptizer" for Jesus, who John believes has come into the world as the Messiah. Jesus convinces John that he should continue to act as the one who baptizes, for that is God's plan. We will reflect on the Sacrament of Baptism and what that Sacrament means for our life and our discipleship as we follow Christ. We will also discuss John's hesitation to baptize Jesus, and where we might feel that God is calling us to do things in life that might be more than we think we have gifts to successfully accomplish.
